THE HISTORY OF
Racine Neighborhood Watch
In the early 1980s, the City of Racine experienced dramatic increases in violent crime, drugs, gang activity, and violence. Concerned citizens, community leaders, and law enforcement all understood that the police alone could not reduce violent crime and that crime prevention was not the sole responsibility of law enforcement. Successful crime prevention demands strong, reliable, and sustainable partnerships between law enforcement and residents. Using the principles of community-centered crime prevention, this group of visionaries reached out to residents to empower them to create safe and vibrant neighborhoods and assist them in building trusted and good working relationships with law enforcement.Since then, as an established nonprofit organization,RNW has earned, RNW has earned its reputation as the “go-to” for crime prevention and neighborhood quality of life issues. RNW connects residents with community resources and helps citizens find local solutions.
While RNW works closely with police, we are not employed by any law enforcement agency. As an independent nonprofit, RNW is uniquely positioned to partner with all community agencies: law enforcement, city and county departments and agencies, governmental representatives, and community-based businesses and organizations. Our mission continues to focus on crime reduction and safety for all residents, including communities of interest, and to improve the quality of life for all residents throughout the Racine area.
